Hacked Discord accounts spam scam links into every channel they can see. kestrel gives your server a trap channel that real members are told never to post in. Anything posted there comes from a compromised account or a bot, so the bot removes that account on the spot.
What you get, free- One trap channel. Use an existing channel or let the bot create one.
- Your choice of action: ban (deletes that account’s messages from the last hour), kick, or a 24 hour timeout.
- A pinned warning in the trap so real members know not to post.
- Exempt roles for trusted members. The server owner, anyone with Manage Server or Administrator, bots, and webhooks are always exempt.
/trap statusto see your trap settings at a glance.- When the bot is missing a permission it needs, it posts a notice in the trap channel (or your log channel on the paid tier) so you know why an account was not removed. One notice per server per hour.
/trap setupmakes a channel a trap, or creates a new one./trap removestops using a channel as a trap./trap actionchanges what a trap does./trap exemptexempts a role, or removes the exemption./trap statusshows the server’s trap settings./trap helplists these commands.
Only members with Manage Server or Administrator can run these; the bot checks that itself on every command.
Safeguards- A channel Discord uses for the whole server (system, rules, updates, safety alerts) can never become a trap.
- A channel that three or more people posted in during the last day is refused as a trap, so a trap is always a channel nobody uses.
- After 15 catches in 10 minutes a server is slowed down for 30 minutes: a trap set to ban, soft ban, or kick gives a one hour timeout instead (a kick where the bot cannot time out, and the set action where it can do neither; a trap set to timeout keeps its own length), and the bot posts a notice asking you to check the trap channel and your moderators’ accounts.
The bot never reads message text and uses no privileged intents. It acts on one fact only: a message appeared in a trap channel. It stores your server’s trap settings and a daily count of catches (used for the paid tier’s weekly summary). For soft bans it keeps the member id until the unban succeeds, then deletes it; if Discord refuses the unban, it retries a few times over about four hours, then deletes the id. While the bot is offline, the retries wait until it is back. Settings are deleted when the bot leaves your server.
Honest limitsA trap catches accounts that post in it. It does not catch scams posted elsewhere, and it is not a replacement for Discord’s own safety settings or your moderators.
Planned paid tierOnce Discord opens paid tiers for the app, a per server subscription will add up to five traps, soft ban (ban, delete, then an automatic unban after a set number of hours so a recovered member can rejoin), a log channel with each catch and a weekly summary, a new member filter, and adjustable delete and timeout windows.
Permissions the invite asks forView Channels, Send Messages, Manage Messages, Pin Messages, Manage Channels, Kick Members, Ban Members, and Moderate Members. Each one maps to a trap action or to posting and pinning the warning.
